Valfrejus

|
|
| Resort description |
Valfréjus was one of the last resorts to be built in the Alps (early 80's) and although purpose built, it has a friendly and traditional village atmosphere with locals living in the resort all year round and a large natural ice rink in the centre. All chalets are constructed in typical Savoyard style, due to strict planning laws.
Set amid larch and spruce trees and close to the Italian border Valfréjus is only a 10 minute drive from the motorway exit and the TGV station in Modane (4 hrs from Paris by train). There are plans to upgrade the TGV line from Lyon to Turin to full high speed status and an exploratory rail tunnel is being dug under the col du Mont Cenis.

Skiing in Valfrejus
Beginners
have a choice of greens on the Plateau d'Arrondaz, which is also 'the
place' to enjoy the spectacular scenery from the
mountain restaurant.
The
powder for which Valfréjus is well known, will
suit advanced skiers who can also use their ski pass
for La Norma and
Aussois (shuttle bus on
Tuesdays for La Norma and on Thursdays for Aussois c€7). Skiing in
other Maurienne resorts
is possible too or ski the 3 Vallées via the Orelle cable car.
Heliski
is
also offered for the more daring.
ORELLE -
FAST ACCESS TO THE 3 VALLEYS SKI AREA
There are
connections on most days via a shuttle coach from La
Norma to the Orelle cable
car (15km).
This
new high capacity gondola linking the Maurienne Valley to Val Thorens
and the 3 Vallées
is perfect for all advanced skiers who want to enjoy
top level skiing in the largest and certainly one of
the best ski domains in the world with 600km of
pistes. Between Saint Michel and Modane - and only 6km from the
Autoroute - Orelle could not be easier to
access and has an excellent free parking
facility.
Anyone
with a Maurienne '2 day
or more' ski pass can get an Orelle/3 Vallées extension for
only c€22.50 (2006/07 prices) so you could save
a lot of £s on buying a pass in one of the 3
Vallées' resorts!
However, as the connecting pistes are Reds, the Orelle facility is not
recommended for beginners. In particularly bad
weather, it may be closed.
Other Ski
Outings
A
Monday-Friday service goes to La Norma (combined ski
pass with Valfrejus). Every Thursday, the ESF Ski
School organises an outing to Val Thorens.

| The Skiing |
Valfréjus is the birthplace of 'skwal' - a type of snowboard where both feet face the slope - and one of its instructors is the former 'skwal' world champion, Christophe Gros. It has a smallish ski area best suited to intermediates with long blues running back to the resort.
Exciting news for winter 09/10: Despite the global credit crunch, Valfrejus is installing a brand new high-speed 8 seater gondola and 6 seater chair-lift. Construction started immediately after this ski season and is on schedule to open by Christmas 2009. |
 |
| Après Ski |
| Valfrejus can delight and entertain you with 1 tea room, 1 nightclub, 5 bars and 7 restaurants. The Tourist Office offers a baby-sitting service in the evenings. |
 |
| Amenities |
| The Valfrejus shops can cater for your needs with a local produce farm shop, a bakery, 2 snack bars offering take-away food, a mini-supermarket., chemist, photo/gift shop, cash point and newsagents. There are more shops and supermarkets plus Doctors, physiotherapist, pharmacies and dentists in nearby Modane, 10km away. |
|
 |
| Activities |
The very active ValfrejusTourist Office organises weekly entertainment and events including torch light descents, acrobatic ski shows and snowman building competitions: when you arrive pick up the weekly newsletter 'Valfrejus Infos' for full details.
