Resort description

Cauterets is a small town at a short distance from Lourdes and on the threshold of the Pyrenees national park. Cauterets is an historical Pyrenean spa town, which found fame, as the spas are renowned for their special healing powers. As a consequence Cauterets is very lively with a wide selection of good value for money places to go out. Cauterets gives access to 36km of downhill pistes via a main cable-car to ferry the non motorised.

Cauterets is set in the Vallée de Cauterets in the heart of the Haut Pyrenees

 

The Gave (River) de Cauterets runs right through the town

 

Cauterets is just 20km south of Lourdes, the famous religious town with its  Basillica and holy water

 

The Pont d’Escape is located in the heart  of the national park

 

Cauterets is a member of the Kids Station which endevours to accommodate children as much as possible, making Cauterets a great resort for families

 

Skiing in Cauterets

 

Cauterets has the most snow assured skiing in the Pyrenees

 

The pistes are above the town and only accessible by cable car

 

There is a new 8 seater telecabine so you can access the pistes faster

 

Most of the pistes are north facing

 

For novices and intermediates the best place to ski is the Cirque du Lys bowl

There is a terrain park set in the bowl.

 

Cross country skiing

 

Cauterets jewel is its cross-country, which is a drive from the town at Pont d’Espagne and served by a gondola.

 

There is 36km/ 22 miles of trails running up the beautiful deserted valley, beside a stream and a stunning waterfall.

They offer a wide variety of lessons from skiing and snowboarding to snow shoeing and exploring the national park.

 

For children there is Les Marmottes day nursery, which will look after children aged 2 months-3 years.

 

For children aged 3-7 years there is Cirque de Kys, which will entertain the children with a variety of activities.

 

Unfortunately Ski Collection cannot pre-book Ski School in Cauterets.

The Skiing
Le Cirque du Lys provides a great range of skiing for all abilities. The magnificent setting encourages stops to one of the altitude chalet restaurants in between cruising the pleasant and well maintained green, blue and red runs. For the more demanding skiers and boarders a selection of black pistes and reasonable powder off-piste will surely match their search for sensation. The domain stretches to a second independent domain named Pont d'Espagne (reached by bus or with a car) principally made for Nordic skiing but that also offers half a dozen very contemplative circuits to the downhill enthusiasts. Cauterets was awarded "Best Snow Dump of the Season 08/09" by the Ski Club of Great Britain for having 160cm of snow fall in just 36 hours!
Après Ski
Cauterets après ski centres around its bars. Cauterets also has a selection of restaurants and 2 nightclubs. Cauterets restaurants include La Raclette , Aladin and Auberge de Bouic which offers traditional mountain food.
Amenities
Cauterets is a thermal spa town and has over 90 shops including grocery shops, fashion stores, sports store and a pharmacy. There is also a doctor's surgery, dentist, post office and hairdressers. You are also just a short distance away from the Pyrenees national park.
Activities
There are 9 places in town to bathe in the spas. In addition there is a museum and a cinema that you can visit. You can also play mini golf or tennis. Snowshoeing and ice-skating can be tried. Or you can try your luck at the casino.

Airport access: Lourdes: 26 miles, approximately 45 mins. Pau: 46 miles, approximately 1 hr 15 mins. Toulouse: 126 miles, approximately 2 hrs 15 mins.
