Family Budget Ski Holidays - Why not try the Pyrenees?

pyrenees_piau_engaly-23166.jpgFamille Plus_010.jpgrepos.jpgla pela.jpg

Saint Lary | Cauterets | La Mongie Tourmalet | Peyragudes

  • Not as far away as you would think
  • Charming Pyrenean mountain villages, with an authentic French atmosphere
  • Recent massive investments in high speed lift systems, snow cannons, pistes maintenance
  • Traditional spa Culture - focussing on well-being which creates a more peaceful and relaxing atmosphere
  • Stunning scenery, unspoilt pistes
  • An excellent choice for families
  • A wide range of recently built quality accommodation
  • Great Value   - With groceries, bar drinks and restaurant meals, ski school and equipment hire also cheaper, the savings can be huge

As a specialist niche ski tour operator in France we feel that the resorts of the Pyrenees, rarely offered on the British market, are well underrated and represent excellent value for money - together with a new experience than you would normally get from larger resorts and at lower prices. Other advantages are the unique character and intimate charm to each resort, the genuine friendliness of the locals and the mid-altitude locations ideal for the younger children who will not be subject to altitude sickness. Moreover, you will be able to enjoy meals with a Spanish flavour and experience a relaxing way of life.

The ski domains here are developed at a smaller scale than the world-renowned resorts of the Northern Alps. What makes them attractive though are their equally first class lift systems, good snow reliability and snowmaking from top to bottom of the main runs. The slopes here undulate below and above the tree line and thus suited to beginners wanting to build confidence and the intermediate skiers and snowboarders looking for a challenge.

Though they are indeed further away from the Channel ports, these mountain ranges have easier access than you might think. Driving from Calais to the Pyrenees will take a less than couple of hours more than getting to the Tarentaise in the Northern Alps. For those who prefer flying Toulouse, Pau, Lourdes/Tarbes are excellent gateways to the Hautes-Pyrenees.

St Lary - All the best of a leading ski resort

Saint Lary is a large traditional Pyrenean resort, with up-to-date facilities such as new lifts and snow cannons. The resort is linked by road or cable car to altitude stations at La Cabane, the larger Pla d'Adet and Espiaube making it one of the most important ski centres in the French Pyrenees.

Visitors who want a break from skiing can experience dog sledging, paragliding, snow mobiling or relax in the famous Thermal Baths. There is also the opportunity to go ice skating, bungee trampolining and for the kids to join in on the weekly snowman competition.

The resort is approved by Ski France’s Famille Plus Montagne . It is committed to offering the very best amenities and activities for children’s enjoyment. Before skiing, the resort was famous for it healing waters which contain sulphur and sodium. These thermal springs have been renowned since antiquity and are still accessible today.

7 nights self-catering in Saint Lary starts from £63pp. Price based on 5 sharing a 2 bedroom apartment in the residence Soleil d’Aure on an accommodation only basis.

7 nights self-catering in Cauterets starts from £70pp. Price based on 5 sharing a 2 bedroom apartment in the residence Le Domaine des 100 Lacs, with pool on an accommodation only basis.

Cauterets - Traditional French spa town

Cauterets is a small town at a short distance from Lourdes and on the threshold of the Pyrenees national park. Cauterets is an historical Pyrenean spa town which found fame as the spas are renowned for their special healing powers. As a consequence Cauterets is very lively with a wide selection of good value for money places to go out. Cauterets gives access to 36km of downhill pistes via a main cable-car.

Le Cirque du Lys provides a great range of skiing for all abilities. For the more demanding skiers and boarders a selection of black pistes and reasonable powder off-piste will surely match their search for sensation. Snowshoeing and ice-skating can also be tried.

In addition to the range of good value restaurants and bars, on and off the piste, there are 9 spas, a museum and a cinema that you can visit, or you can try your luck at the casino.

La Mongie Tourmalet  - Largest winter sports resort in the French Pyrenées

The 2 snow-parks have Boardercross, tables, big air, rails and a leisure area open to all abilities. Peyragudes - nestled in quiet traditional Pyrenean valleys

Peyragudes is situated at the heart of the Pyrenees, in the Louron and Larboust Valleys and was created by merging the two ski resorts of Peyresourde and Agudes together - which instantly provides the sensation of space and freedom to move.

This relatively small, modern, upbeat and fun ski resort has a lot to offer and has always vowed to be as innovative and surprising as possible. The beautiful curves, long uninterrupted descents, gentle valleys and rolling landscapes all ensure great skiing pleasure for all ski and snowboard abilities and provide an ideal location for all winter sports.

For non-skiers or for those looking for a break from the slopes, visitors can make the most of the other activities Peyragudes has to offer: paragliding, dog sledging, speed-riding, air-boarding, guided snow-shoe hikes and a night in an igloo are just some of the activities on offer! The area is famous for its historic Balnéa Spa located in the tranquil hamlet of Genos-Loudenvielle. Here the focus is on well-being and the ambience is peaceful and serene, a world apart from the frantic atmosphere of some of the larger resorts in the Alps. Genos-Loudenvielle is approximately 9 miles from the resort of Peyragudes so a car would be advisable.

Other nearby attractions are the casino in Luchon, the Gavarnie circus and the Lourdes Caves. So there really is something for everyone!

7 nights self-catering in Peyragudes starts from £37pp. Price based on 6 sharing a 1 bedroom alcove apartment in the residence Les Jardins de Balnéa  on an accommodation only basis.
